CHINA AT ODDS WITH U.S. ON IRAN ARMS SALES

WASHINGTON – China remains the leading supplier of nuclear and missile technology to Iran, despite the recent imposition of international sanctions on Tehran due to its nuclear development program.

The Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, or CSIS, said that such exports include fighter jets, main battle tanks and naval vessels.

“China is an important arms supplier for Iran,” the CSIS report said.

China also is supplying roadside bombs and landmines in addition to anti-ship cruise missiles, air defense systems and armored personnel carriers. While such supplies have dropped in recent years, Washington objected to those sales as well.

“Despite the decrease in volume from the previous decade, Sino-Iranian arms sales continue to have a significant effect on the stability of the region through Iran’s support of proxy militant forces,” the report said.

In turn, Iran has transferred numerous weapons to its proxies in Afghanistan and Iraq while China has transferred technology and know-how for Iran’s missile program.

Missiles that China has supplied include the CS-8 and DF-15 ballistic missiles and the HY-2 Silkworm. Because of China’s great need for uninterrupted supplies of oil from Iran, Beijing has helped construct Iran’s main research plant at Isfahan and supplied technology for other nuclear reactors it intends to construct.
